Prelude: We landed in Houston after our grueling 15 hour flight, lucky for us we got a sky couch as the third person that was sitting with us knew the captain and got his own sky couch. We were staying in Houston for a couple of days before heading up to Austin (read about that here). So we hit the ground running, picked the car up, off to our AirBnB property to see where it was. It was awesome! Then it was off to Kroger’s for a supply run (Kroger’s is the local supermarket chain). We stocked up, and then dropped off the supplies.  We had a few hours to kill before bedtime and the jetlag hit. So we headed to the Petrol Station for a few beers, then headed to Lei Low Bar. Well, 1 cocktail would have been enough but ended up having 3 so that was nighty night.

On our second day we headed up to Brenham for a look around. There isn’t much open on Monday’s but was still worth the visit as we stopped at the Blue Bell Creameries and then headed up to Antique Rose Emporium. On our way back from Brenham we decided to stop at the Lazy Mule Saloon. Words cannot describe this place but it is definitely worth the stop.

Once back in Houston we had dinner at Hughie’s Tavern & Grille which is a Vietnamese Restaurant with craft beer. The food is good and the prices are decent. Then back to our AirBnb for a few nightcaps and then off to Austin the next day.

houston

Back from Austin: We arrived in Houston on a Saturday after a long drive from Austin and were expecting a crawfish festival at the Discovery Green in Downtown Houston, but the event was postponed to later in the day due to a fundraising event earlier that day. Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen saved the day as we had an amazing meal at this awesome restaurant. We had everything from oysters, to crawfish chowder to a prawn cocktail. An amazing meal, a lovely restaurant, and really friendly staff. This place is worth the visit.

The Cleveland Indians were playing the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park and we were lucky enough to get tickets to go to this amazing stadium to watch the game. As the roof can be opened and closed, it was closed as the weather was raining on and off during the day. Every time the home team hit a home run, the train would start up with a ‘choo choo’ and moved back and forth on the track. So much fun and atmosphere! Following the game we did a pub crawl through downtown Houston. Although it was a Sunday night, with wet weather, there was a lot of going on and heaps of people out.

Part 2 Coming

Austin the state capital of Texas is one of the best places to live in the U.S in 2017. Austin is a pretty cool city to visit but it does have some drawbacks, not a lot though. We stayed close to E Cesar Chavez Street which is an up and coming street for food and a night out. Our first night out we hit the Eastside Tavern within walking distance of our digs. The tavern had an upstairs patio which we took full advantage of. The cocktails were great! Make sure to order the Eastside Martini and if you are after Margaritas hit the Eastside Frozen Margarita. On the way home we stopped by the Weather Up for a night cap.

Day 2 we decided to hit the Texas Capitol Building. It is well worth the visit and free to get in which is a bonus. Then we headed for Red’s gun rang. This was my first time at a gun range in the States and the guys there were awesome. Took us through the drills and what they required of us on the range. Really professional.

Then it was onto our big night out in Austin. We decided we were going to do Rainey Street since it has a little bit more class than Sixth Street. The motto was one drink and move on. I think we might have strayed away from that towards the end of the night. Highlights of the night was Craft Pride with Texas craft beers on tap, Half Step the cocktails here are amazing and if you go to Rainey Street you need to visit Bangers sausages and beer.

After our big night out it was a recovery day, a few breakfast tacos, juices and water. We still had time to go to Black Sheep Lodge, they have some sort of happy hour every day and then onto The White Horse which is a bit of a dive with live country music but still worth checking out.

You can’t go to Austin without checking out a few Breweries so our last day was devoted to a pub crawl but first off we needed to get some food. So we hit La Barbecue. We got there pretty early but still had to wait in line for 1 ½ hours. I’m not sure why it takes so long to get the food done but by the time we got to the front, they had run out of ribs, but one good thing is you get free beer while you wait. Just a heads up, if you pass through Lockhart you might as well go to Smitty’s Market as the BBQ is to die for. So we started at the top of Sixth Street and hit Hops and Grain, Lazarus and Zilker. They all have their likes and dislikes! One thing is if you go to Lazarus, don’t expect any social engagement as out of the 30 people that were there, 25 were on Laptops. We did keep heading down Sixth Street and do a few more bars but by this time, everything started to catch up, so it was home time for bed.

A couple of special mentions, Blue Owl Brewing are doing sour mash beers –  something worth checking out, and we hit Gourdough’s food truck on our way out – sugar rush all the way. All in all Austin is a fun city to go to but if you aren’t into hipster everywhere you look, it might not be the place for you.

Smithfield is a where the old meat market district is but it is a great place to do a pub crawl. We  started off here at Ferrari’s Snack Bar and had a full cooked English Breakfast (now you can do this at the start or the end).

smithfield-pubs-01

We headed over to the Fox and Anchor where you need to have either a pint or a GnT and don’t forget to have a scotch egg which “boasts to be the tastiest scotch eggs in the country”.

Then on to Charterhouse Bar for a few cocktails at happy hour where the staff is really friendly and the cocktails are good.

Once finished, head through the  meat market and check out the history on the way to The Cocktail Trading Co. This is a hidden bar so head inside and go down the stairs on the right (just check the time on google for when it is opens). The barman offered to make us a cocktail so we took what was on offer and both cocktails were great. We could have stayed here but we were on a mission.

So off to The Hope Tavern for another pint or a GnT. Not a long stay and then we head down to Cubana Bar. We recommend Mojitos here and the service is good and fast.

smithfield-pubs-02

Second to last stop was Ye Olde Mitre. Now, if you look this up on google it looks great. Just don’t go there at 5pm if you are looking for those photos you see on the net. All the suits turn up and you can hardly move but still worth a look.

And finally City Of London Distillery (COLD) which isn’t really in Smithfield but just a 2 min walk. Now this place is worth a visit as they have great cocktails made with there own gin. The staff make an effort. Hope they keep it up. We would have stayed here but we had a prior engagement we needed to make (dinner at Heston Blumenthal’s restaurant).

All in all Smithfield was a great place for a bar/pub crawl.
